Sex
After A Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is a life changing/altering event for
a woman. The average woman is already concerned about
everything that is going on in her life and tends to
wonder if she is still attractive to her spouse or significant
other. After all, a woman is losing her ability to procreate
when she has a hysterectomy.
So are there any long-term effects on sex when you
have a hysterectomy? Remember that each person is different,
so the effect on sex will also differ. However, you
will be glad to know that a hysterectomy will not alter
yoursex drive or enjoyment of sex in any major way.
When Can Sexual Intercourse Resume?
After you have had your surgery, your surgeon will
give you some instructions about aftercare. One thing
he/she will talk about is resuming your sex life. A
large majority of surgeons agree that six to eight weeks
is sufficient time to recover from the procedure, no
matter which specific procedure you went with; this
is true especially of the abdominal procedure.
After eight weeks of healing time, you can resume normal
sexual relations and may have little to no discomfort.
It is normal for a woman to not be nterested in sex
for about three to four weeks after the surgery. Yet,
as she begins to heal and get her energy back, her sex
drive will kick into gear and she will want to enjoy
sex once more.
Studies On Hysterectomies and A Woman’s Sex
Life
There have been numerous studies on the effects of
a hysterectomy on a woman’s sex life. Most, if
not all, have concluded that a woman who had a healthy
sex life before her surgical operation will resume that
level of sexual activity. For women who were always
concerned about getting pregnant or suffering with chronic
pelvic pain, they will find that sex is much more enjoyable,
since there are no more worries with these two issues.
Differences In Sex Life and Your Surgery Type
Your Cervix Plays Important Role In Internal Orgasms.
How your sex life will be will depend on the surgery
type and what was done. For instance, if you had a hysterectomy
where your cervix was left alone, you are more likely
to have an orgasm during sex. Your cervix plays a huge
part in your vagina’s orgasms.
External Orgasms and Hysterectomies
Studies about a woman’s external or clitoral
orgasms showed that the frequency or intensity of the
orgasms were not altered in any way, regardless if the
woman still had her cervix or had it removed.
Mental Health Symptoms and Sex After a Hysterectomy
A woman often experiences a wide range of emotions
after she has a hysterectomy. Don't be surprised if
this happens to you. So just swat kinds of feelings
are you likely to have after your hysterectomy?
They can include:
- Decreased sex drive
- Depression
- Lost feeling
- Menopause
However, these can be taken care of with certain medications,
and in time, you can resume your active sexual lifestyle.
Possible Problem After a Hysterectomy
Some women have a tendency to experience vaginal dryness
after their hysterectomy. If you are suffering from
this, a lubricant like KY Jelly can help with this problem.
